I flunked my Ancient History class when I was at university. I admit it. I didn't see the point, couldn't make the connection to the rather dry textbook and the interesting reality of the Ancient world and to top it off the professor didn't have the key to open the secrets of Ancient world to me. So it was with slight hesitation that I started on the 'Classical World'.
I kept it in my bag to read on the way back from work, and I slowly worked my way through. And there's a lot to get through, centuries, civilizations and rulers. I liked Robin Lane Fox's frank and clear writing style, and the way he took me by the hand and told me the highlights. But, and this is not the writer's fault, it was only the highlights. Scratching the surface, an overview (which I knew it was before I started reading it), and sadly no room or time for in depth discussion.
